Chapter 23

BOBBI

Ahhhhhhh! I sigh as I flop back on the fluffy white cloud of a mattress in my luxurious hotel room. We do not stay in enough hotels. As nice as the mobile mansion is, having all this space and privacy makes it no match. And after driving through the night and accompanying Josh to the hospital this morning, I might do well to just crash out right here for a while, but with the knowledge that Josh could call at any time, I doubt I’d get any sleep. I might as well push through until tonight.

After changing my clothes and freshening up a little, I send a video chat alert to Matt and he picks up quickly.

“Bobbi, is everything okay? How’s our boy?” he asks, getting straight to the point, and I open my mouth to respond when I see the phone screen get jostled, accompanied by some scuffling noises and light male bickering. The chaotic movement stops and the screen is now populated by Chris’s face. He looks like a broken-down wreck with his blood-shot eyes and his golden surfer boy hair sticking up in several directions.

“Bobbi,” he pants, like he just broke the tape in the Boston Marathon. “Level with me, Bobbi. Is my boy okay?”

“He’s okay, Chris,” I nod vigorously at the screen, trying to assure him. “He got some sleep and sobered up and he’s with his mom now. Speaking of sleep… you should…” I wave a finger at his appearance. He looks like he has not only stayed up all night but had a serious caffeine crash, and his eyes are wide and looked dried out. I’m not sure he can even blink, let alone fall asleep.

“I should get some sleep?” he finishes.

“Yeah,” I scrunch my face and nod, “and maybe drink some water?”

“Okay,” he nods weakly and disappears from the screen as Matt takes control of the phone again.

“How’s Mrs. Nolan?” he asks, getting right to the point again.

“You know, I don’t know a whole lot,” I shrug and shake my head, telling the truth. “I only heard the ICU nurse say that she’d been taken off the ventilator, so that’s progress, but I don’t know anything else. I’ll have Josh get in touch with you later, though.”

“Sounds like you’ve got everything under control,” Matt smiles and shakes his head, and I love the confidence he’s showing in me.

“I just helped with a couple things,” I say modestly.

“Thanks for being there with him - and for checking in,” he responds, before reminding me that the next show is luckily enough in Chicago so they’ll be here to join us in a couple of days.

After ending the call, I head straight for the door in search of some sustenance. While the idea of ordering room service and staying in that beautiful bed all day sounds heavenly, I’d probably fall into a coma and I should probably be on red alert in case Josh needs me.

I look up nearby attractions on my phone as I inhale a soup and sandwich lunch in the hotel bar.
